A Journey of Faith, Resilience, and Gratitude
When Samuel LeBlanc, now a junior at Pope John Paul II High School, shared his story at the Take Flight Scholarship Breakfast, he reminded the community of the life-changing impact of a JPII education.
Originally from Canada, Sam’s early years were marked by constant moves as his father served in the Canadian Army. Through all the change, he found strength in his faith and the Catholic communities that surrounded him. His life took a dramatic turn when, during the onset of COVID-19, he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. “It was probably the biggest trial that my family and I had to face,” he shared. “My mom would always say the reason I survived was because of the Catholic community that was praying for us.”
After his recovery, Sam’s family returned to Washington, where he rejoined friends at St. Michael Parish School and later enrolled at JPII—a decision that, in his words, “has impacted my personal and spiritual growth.”
“When the year started, I noticed that this school was much different than the schools I went to before,” Sam said. “The teachers and staff genuinely cared about us succeeding. Whether it’s through Step-Up, where you get help with schoolwork, or coaches who help you practice to be the best you can, JPII has made a difference.”
Sam credits donors, parish communities, and the Archdiocese for making his education possible: “Without their help, our family would not be able to afford Catholic education. I’m grateful to be a student at this school—it’s a blessing to have a community that continues to support us.”
